Javier Banegas was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1974. After obtaining his fine arts degree in 1998, Banegas won the Penagos Drawing Award which kick-started his career and popularity.
Banegas produces brightly coloured close-up still-life depictions of objects that have been altered by the presence of humans, usually objects found in his studio, such as pencil shavings and paint pots. The essence of human interaction denotes a sense of the ‘passing of time’ whereas the monumentality of his large-scale paintings allows the viewer to appreciate the inner beauty and meaning of the mundane.
